Vatican security really can’t be that bad

It strikes me that Vatican security really can’t be that bad, or the various Popes would all die very quickly of assassination. May I propose instead that they actually allow relatively harmless people to occasionally attack, thus bringing the Pope noticeably into the public eye, whilst at the same time encouraging public sympathy towards him. Or at least, if I were working as the Pope’s PR guru, that’s how I’d do it…
