There’s a first class article in the current Atlantic (April 2009), One World, Under God by Robert Wright. It is adapted from his current book, The Evolution of God.
What I found most interesting were the opening sections which concisely describe how Paul took the message of Jesus and changed it into something quite different.
It’s a worthwhile read, whether you agree with the ultimate conclusions or not.
