The 10 Commandments as a Basis for Morality?

- 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Some people claim this commandment is a blanket prohibition of swearing and profanity, a concept I am not averse to. Yet, it is clear on reading the entire verse that it is only applicable to a small part of the universe of swear words. The purpose of this commandment is not to avoid offending our fellow humans, but rather to avoid offending the delicate sensibilities of that supposedly all-powerful God. And if we do, he says he is going to hold a grudge.
So once again, this commandment has nothing to do with morality. It is all about religious observance.
