What you misunderstand is that God is holy and that all are cursed with original sin. God gives the gift of faith as He sees fit — it is just that, a gift, unmerited by the recipient. Ephesians explains this.

Nowhere does the Bible say God is ‘fair’; rather He is just and holy!
